Best iPhone App Ever award winners announced

By Jeff Smykil

The "best ever" anything label is always one that kind of irks me. Most things either haven't been around long enough, or are just too subjective to pick a clear "best ever." Whether it's the best guitar player ever, best painter ever, or best video game ever, usually the "winner" is hotly disputed. That's why I was somewhat skeptical when I saw a new contest going by the name of "2008 Best App Ever Awards," focusing on the iPhone.

The site chose 34 different categories to poll the general public on and then took nominations from that same public, as well as a committee of notables from the Mac and iPhone communities. The voting was then opened to the public, votes were tallied, and now we have the results.

Shazam—the application that listens to a song on the radio and then tells you what it is—cleaned up, winning Best App Ever, Most Innovative App, and Best iPhone WOW App. Other winners in notable categories were Ocarina in Best $.99 App, Weightbot in Most Original User Interface, Twitterrific in Best User Interface, Rolando in Best Game Graphics, and Fieldrunners in Best Long-Play Game.

I can't say that I agree with all the winners—I can't even say I agree with all the nominations—but I can say that this is a decent list of quality applications to peruse if you have the time. As little sense as it makes, we're pretty sure the Best App Ever Awards will return next year. If this is indeed the case, we can only hope the organizers will take a serious bite out of the number of award categories. Perhaps paring them down to about ten so would ensure that it has a little less of a grade-school awards ceremony feel to it.
